Postnatal Recovery: Getting Back to Movement Safely

Postnatal Recovery: How Physiotherapy Supports Your Body After Birth

Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s biggest transitions but it’s also one of the most physically demanding. Many new mums feel unsure about when and how to start moving again after birth.
The truth? Postnatal physiotherapy can help your body recover safely, restore confidence, and make daily life (and motherhood) feel easier.

At Assist Allied Health in Capalaba, our women’s health physiotherapists guide you through each stage of postnatal recovery with compassion, privacy, and expertise.

Why Recovery Looks Different for Every Mum

Every birth, body, and recovery journey is unique. You might feel ready to get moving within weeks, or you might need time to heal.
Physiotherapy helps you rebuild gradually, respecting your body’s pace and needs. Whether your birth was vaginal or caesarean, gentle assessment and support can make a huge difference to long-term wellbeing.

Common Postnatal Challenges (and How Physio Helps)

Pelvic Floor Weakness:
It’s normal for the pelvic floor to feel stretched or weak after birth. Your physio can help retrain these muscles and reduce symptoms like leakage or heaviness.

Abdominal Separation (DRAM):
Your physiotherapist will assess abdominal muscle separation and teach safe exercises to restore core connection.

Mastitis & Breast Discomfort:
Hands-on physiotherapy and management with ultrasound and laser, can help manage blocked ducts and inflammation, easing pain and supporting feeding comfort. Advice and education is extremely important to reduce recurrence.

Cracked and painful nipples:

With low level laser therapy, healing can be promoted and the correct guidance and advice can help you get back to blissful  breastfeeding.

Back & Neck Pain:
Feeding, changing and holding your baby can cause strain. Postural advice and gentle manual therapy relieve tension and improve strength.

When It’s Safe to Return to Exercise

There’s no one-size-fits-all timeline. Generally, low-impact exercise and pelvic floor work can begin once cleared by your GP or physio but your treatment plan should be tailored.

Your physiotherapist will help you progress safely through:

  • Early postnatal mobility and recovery
  • Core and pelvic floor retraining
  • Gradual strength and endurance building
  • Return to running, gym or sport (if that’s your goal)

Your First Postnatal Physiotherapy Appointment

At Assist Allied Health, your first session includes:

  • A confidential discussion about your birth and recovery
  • Pelvic floor and abdominal assessment (only if you’re comfortable)
  • Education on safe movement, lifting and posture

Our goal is simple, to help you move confidently, without fear or pain.
